The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team moved to 2-0 in league play with a convincing 3-0 sweep at Catawba on Friday night. Due to the unbalanced league format this year, this is the first of three SAC matchups between the Bears and Catawba this season.
Lenoir-Rhyne was particularly solid in the third set, hitting .565 as a team with 16 kills to just three errors. The Bears hit .343, .150 and .565 in the three sets compared to .033, .029 and .087 for the Indians. Emmaleigh Allen led the Bears with 12 kills and added a team-high 12 digs for the double-double.
Ashley Hawkins had 10 kills on the night and has reached double figures in kills in seven contests this year. The duo of Braelyn Faust and Emma Clark in the middle combined for 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Rachel Wildermuth dished out 21 assists and has reached at least 20 helpers in four of the last five matches.
15 different players saw action for Catawba with none reaching more than six kills. The Indians hit just .046 as a team.
Lenoir-Rhyne has started 2-0 in league play for the second straight year. Prior to 2021, LR didn’t win its first two league games since 2017. LR has won nine straight against Catawba, one shy of the longest win streak in series history. LR won 10 straight over Catawba from 1978-1983. This is the third sweep in the last four matches against the Indians.
Hawkins topped 100 kills on the season and has 109 so far this year. Hawkins tallied 158 kills in all of 2021. Hawkins now has 123 service aces for her career, which places her sixth in program history.
The Bears are 6-3 overall, 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Anderson for a pivotal early season contest.
