Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Suffers First Setback in South Atlantic Conference Play

The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team traveled to No. 24 Wingate and suffered its first SAC loss of the season in a 3-0 defeat. The loss snapped LR’s six match winning streak in a rematch of the NCAA Southeast Regional Semifinal from last season that the Bears won.

The first set was ultra-competitive with neither team holding a lead larger than three points until a late Wingate run. With the set tied at 20, the Bulldogs would rattle off four straight and staved off a late LR rally to take a 25-22 first set victory.

The second and third sets went Wingate’s way by identical counts of 25-17.

Wingate’s balanced offense featured three players with 10 kills each. Shannon Kasparak finished with 36 assists and 16 digs.

Colette Romp led the Bears with six kills and Bailey Carpenter added 12 digs. Mackenzie Husley had 16 assists and four kills for LR. Wingate held the Bears to just .111 hitting on the evening, the lowest of the season for LR.

These teams entered as the only teams in the Piedmont Division of the South Atlantic Conference without a loss. LR defeated Wingate twice last season, once at home and once in Anderson in the NCAA Tournament. Wingate just entered the national rankings at No. 24 this week.

This ended a stretch where LR played 11 of their first 12 games away from home.

The Bears are 8-4, 4-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will return to action on Friday night when they return home for just the second time this season as they host Emory & Henry ay 6pm.
