Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Start Conference Play At 4-0
The Bears move to 4-0 with an intense 3-1 victory over Anderson in a loud Shuford Arena on Tuesday night. The Bears dropped the first set but rattled off three straight victories to grab their fourth straight win. Cheyenne Clonch led the way with a career-high 14 kills and hit .458 in the win.
The Bears jumped out to leads of 4-0 in the first and 3-0 in the second and third sets. However, the guests had the answer in the opening stanza, rattling off 11 of 12 points after LR led 8-4. An attack error by the Bears clinched the set for Anderson and an early 1-0 edge.
LR hit .285 in the second set and took a 25-19 victory. A service ace by Parkley Hennings gave the Bears the win and evened the contest at 1.
LR once again ran out to a quick lead in the third set and pushed it to as large as five at 16-11. However, Anderson would have a rally in them and drew within one at 19-18. Taylor Osborne notched a kill and Aasia McNeill had back-to-back kills as LR extended the lead to 22-19 and would eventually come away with a 25-21 win to take the 2-1 lead.
Anderson would grab the upper hand in the fourth set, running out to a 12-8 advantage. The Bears also faced a 19-16 deficit but three straight points, capped by a block by Osborne, pulled it even at 19. LR grabbed a 21-20 lead before the teams traded the next five points.
With it tied at 23, Clonch and Emmaleigh Allen notched consecutive kills to seal the victory as the home crowd helped LR finish the night.
Allen, the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, had 13 kills and 13 digs. McNeill finished with 11 kills and also had 13 digs. Kathy Peter had nine kills and seven blocks while Sydney Karjala had 49 assists, 15 digs, three kills and two blocks.
Clonch’s previous career high was 12 kills against Coker on September 5. This was her fourth double-digit kill effort on the season. This was the fourth straight win for LR over Anderson but the Trojans hold the all-time edge in the series 16-15. The longest LR winning streak over Anderson is five straight from 2011-13.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate are the final two undefeated teams in SAC play with the Bears at 4-0 and Bulldogs at 2-0. This was the first home match for LR since Sept. 2. LR has won four straight at home.
The Bears are 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will stay at home with a Friday matchup against Catawba. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
