The Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball team dropped a three-setter against Tusculum in the SAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Monday, 3-0, marking the second win for the Pioneers on LR’s home court. The Pioneers will move on to the Semifinals and take on Carson-Newman while LR will wait to find its postseason fate.
It was a sloppy start for LR who fell behind early in the first set and couldn’t regain the momentum. LR hit .083 with nine errors in the opening frame and fell 25-19. Tusculum kept the momentum with a second set win by a final count of 25-22 and outhit LR .262 to .128. The Pioneers held off a late LR rally in the third set to earn the sweep. Tusculum led 24-22 but LR tied it up at 24. A kill by Carli Pigza sent Tusculum on to the semifinals at 28-26.
Ashley Hawkins finished with 10 kills and 12 digs for LR. Mackenzie Hulsey had 24 assists and 14 digs and Bailey Carpenter added 17 digs.
Emiah Burrowes led Tusculum with a game-high 13 kills.
Tusculum won the first matchup between the two teams this season 3-1 back on Oct. 1. Tusculum earned a bit of revenge after being knocked out of the SAC Tournament in 2021 by the Bears in the semifinals.
LR only lost three home games all season but two at the hands of Tusculum.
The Bears are 18-9 on the season and will have to wait until the NCAA selection show to find out their postseason fate.
