Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Finishes Regular Season With Sweep of Newberry

In the final regular season home game for seven Lenoir-Rhyne seniors, the Bears crushed Newberry 25-17, 25-16, 25-12 in the regular season finale inside Shuford Arena. Lenoir-Rhyne finishes the regular season 18-8 and 13-5 in the SAC, and will host a quarterfinal match in the SAC Volleyball Tournament starting on Monday.

Lenoir-Rhyne got off to a hot start in the first set, winning 25-17. The Bears had 13 kills and hit .242 in the set. LR held Newberry to to just a .121 hitting percentage in the first set. The Bears got eight out of the last nine points in the set, and Ashley Hawkins finished off the set with a kill.

In the second set, it was more of the same for LR. The Bears scored six out of the first seven points in the set and cruised, with Hawkins finishing off the second set for the kill as well.

In the third set, the Bears continued to dominate. Emmaleigh Allen had a couple of aces in the third set, and the Bears cruised to another win.

Hawkins led the Bears with 14 kills. Braelyn Faust and Colette Romp each had five kills, Emma Clark had four, and Hannah Benson and Sarah Shropshire each had three kills on their senior days. Senior Bailey Carpenter led the Bears defensively with 11 digs.

Hawkins had double-digit kills in five out of the last six matches of the regular season. Carpenter finished the season fourth in the SAC in digs, and had double-digit digs in 21 out of the 26 matches this year. This was the final regular season home game for Faust, Hawkins, Romp, Carpenter, Shropshire, Benson and Clark.

LR sweeps the season series with Newberry and has won four straight and six out of the last seven meetings with the Wolves.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 18-8, 13-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears have secured the No. 2 seed in the Piedmont Division of the SAC Tournament and will host Mountain Division No. 3 seed Tusculum in the SAC Quarterfinals on Monday at 7 p.m. in Shuford Arena.
