Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ella Penny was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women’s Swimmer of the Week for meets competed in during the ninth week of the 2022-23 season, the Conference office announced today while Micah McRea was named the Men’s Swimmer of the Week.
Penny, a freshman from Greer, S.C., recorded her first NCAA B cut time and multiple career best times at the Spartan Invitational in Clearwater, Florida this past weekend. She earned her B cut in the 200 Freestyle, touching the wall at 1:52.96 in prelims and improving to 1:52.91 in finals. Her time was both a career best and a team best for the Bears this season. Penny also recorded a career best time in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.27.
McRea, a senior from Hickory, N.C., set a new school record in the 200 Freestyle and earned multiple NCAA B cut times at the Spartan Invitational in Clearwater, Florida this past weekend. He earned his B cuts in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 54.70 and in the 400 Individual Medley, touching the wall at 3:53.18. His time in the 400 IM is the seventh fastest in Division II this season, was over six seconds faster than the B standard (4:00.42) and was less than five seconds shy of an NCAA A cut (3:48.97). McRea led off the 800 Freestyle relay, splitting 1:38.46 in his 200 Freestyle leg which broke his own school record by .12 of a second (1:38.58) that he had set at the 2020 Bluegrass Mountain/ Carolinas Conference Championships.
