Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Wins First Game of SAC Championship Series

Down two runs and down to their final two outs of game one of the SAC Championship series, Madison Primm hit a two-run homerun to force extra innings then Julia Mardigian hit a two-out RBI double in the 8th as the Bears took game one of the best of three series against Anderson. LR will need one win tomorrow to capture the 2024 SAC Championship.

Lani Warren got the Bears on the board in the first with her 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot. Lauren Rakes helped her cause and extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo shot in the second. Cassidy Wall continued her hot post season with another RBI in the 3rd. The Trojans then battled back and scored the game’s next six runs with a pair in the 3rd and four in the 5th. The scored remained 6-4 till the 7th and Mardigian lead the inning off with a double before Primm tied it with a two-run blast. Mardigian’s third double of the game in the 8th was the game winner as Madison Wilson got out of a threat in the bottom of the 8th to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Wilson and Rakes both threw four innings as Rakes had six strikeouts as both pitchers give up two earned runs. Wilson picks up win number 15.

This is the first time the Bears have made it to the SAC Championship Series under this new format. However this is just the second season of this format. Bears were ranked #4 in this week’s Southeast Regional, while Anderson was #8. LR has won five straight games in this postseason including three in extra innings. Bears last SAC Conference Tournament Championship was in 2013.

The Bears won their fourth game when trailing after six innings this season. Mardigian had three more doubles and now has 28 on the season. Mardigian, Warren and Primm (3-4-5 in the order) were 7-13 on the day.

Game two of the series is tomorrow at 2:00 PM and game three if necessary will also be tomorrow.
