Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Sweeps Virginia-Wise

The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team made their first-ever trip up to UVA Wise and came away with their sixth straight win while hitting five more home runs on the day after hitting eight on Wednesday. Lauren Rakes struck out 18 Cavaliers in her 10 innings in the circle on the day, picking up a win in game one and save in game two. Kylee Leonhardt hit two more bombs in game one to lead the Bears. L-R won game one, 5-0 and took the nightcap, 8-2.

Leonhardt was the story in game one with a two-run homer in the first and then a three-run home run in the third. Leonhardt went 2-2 with the 2 HR’s and 5 RBIs and two walks on the day. Savannah Moorefield, Kendall Osborne, Karelyn Rackard had hits on the contest. Rakes threw the shutout in the circle striking out 12 Cavs allowing just three hits to move to 13-2.

In game two, after the Cavs scored first, Cassidy Wall had a two-run RBI single to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the third. Mardigian added a two-run homer two batters later to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.

UVA-Wise’s Michaela Bar homered to cut the Bears lead to two in the 4th. Rakes and Sherrill added solo home runs in the 6th.

Bears added insurance runs when Wall and Mardigian had RBIs in the 7th to give the Bears a 8-2 lead and win. Wall and Mardigian both finished 4-8 with 6 RBIs.

Morgan Beeler went the first four inning to pick the win, allowing just one run while striking out five. Rakes came in relief throwing the last three innings to pick up her 5th save of the season.

Moorefield has reached base in 37 straight games and has a 13 game hitting streak. Leonhardt’s third walk on the day was her 100 career walk, becoming the third person in program history with 100 career walks.

Rakes 18 strikeouts on the day moved her pass the 200 strikeout mark on the season. Also with her 5th strikeout, Rakes moves past Brandi Hole for 8th all-time in program history in strikeouts.

Bears hit thirteen homerun in the four games this week.

The Bears are 28-9 overall, 13-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. L-R will host Emory & Henry for an non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 3pm
