Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Rakes Throws No-Hitter

For the third time in her career, Lauren Rakes threw a no-hitter and the Bears scored 10 runs in the first two innings, including a three-run home run from Lora Beth Wood, to beat Coker 10-0. In the night cap, Wood hits her second homer of the day to walk off Coker 10-1 as the Bears have now won 13 in a row. Head Coach Shena Hollar moves two games away from the 1,000 career win mark.

In game one, the story was Rakes as she did not allow a single hit and just walked two hitters. Rakes stuck out five hitters while picking up her 9th win of the season. The Bears gave Rakes tons of run support as the Bears scored ten runs in the first two innings including a six spot in the second inning. Wood’s first three-run blast of the day highlighted a four-run first.

After getting no hits in the first game, the Cobras got three first innings hits including their lone run of the game. The Bears responded with two runs in the bottom of the first then solo runs in the second and third innings.

The Bears then ended the game with two long blasts as Brown hit a two-run home run then Wood ended the game with her second three-run blast of the day. Madison Wilson threw the complete game picking up her seventh win of the season as she gave up just one run while striking out five.

Rakes’ no-hitter was her third no-hitter in her career, Rakes no-hit Tusculum in SAC Quarterfinals in 2022 and then opened last year with no-hitter against King. It was the program’s 23rd no-hitter. The last one before today was Morgan Beeler’s no-hitter against Wingate 368 days ago.

Mardigian extended her hitting streak to eight games with hits in both games today. Mardigian went 5-6 on the day. Lani Warren had three hits in game one but saw her 14 game on base streak snapped in the night cap. Rakes is three strikeout shy of 700 career strikeouts. Rakes will be the 4th player in program history to reach that mark. Wood had seven RBIs on the day.

Hollar’s 998 all-time wins pull her within striking distance of 1,000 for her career. Hollar would become the eighth active coach in NCAA Division II with 1,000 career wins. The Bears have won eight in a row against the Cobras. Coker has only second two runs in the last six games against the Bears.

The last four head-to-head games have only gone five innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 27-5, 4-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Up next for the Bears is a huge SAC Showdown with #11 Wingate on Wednesday afternoon on the road. First pitch is at 2:00 PM.
