Lenoir-Rhyne Names New Director of Bands

Lenoir-Rhyne University has named Tyler Stark to serve as the new director of bands and assistant professor of music following the retirement of current director Neil Underwood in summer 2024. Mr. Stark currently serves as a graduate teaching associate and instructional assistant for the University of Oklahoma marching band.

In addition to leading the Spirit of L-R Marching Band, which Professor Underwood revived in 2016, Mr. Stark will direct the university’s Wind Symphony and provide instruction in instrumental music. He will also coordinate with local music educators and professional associations to promote L-R’s music programs.

Mr. Stark earned a bachelor’s degree in music education at Appalachian State University in 2015. He then served as director of bands at Central Cabarrus High School in Concord before earning a master’s degree in instrumental wind conducting at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2022. This fall, he will complete a doctoral program at the University of Oklahoma, earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
