Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Defeats Limestone

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Team secured its first home conference victory of the season on Tuesday with a 6-1 result over Limestone.

At the start of the match, the Bears took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day.

At the No. 2 line, Zachary Cox and Mattias Selde cruised their way to a 6-2 victory for their most dominant win of the season. At No. 1 doubles, Vadym Rogynskyi and Rufus Plane conquered the top line with a 6-3 final, good enough to give LR the 1-0 advantage.

Heading into singles, Raphael Champaud set the tempo by winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The sophomore has now won back-to-back straight set matches for the Bears.

After the Saints tallied one back in their favor, Rogynskyi was able to pick up his second victory of the day at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 outcome.

With a 3-1 lead in the meeting, Rufus Plane clinched the crucial fourth victory to give the Bears their third conference win of the season at No. 4 singles.

The sophomore took the opening set, 6-4, before Limestone’s Ramiro Rincon Hernandez brought it back even with a 6-3 win. However, Plane bounced back with a 6-3 victory to earn his sixth singles victory of the campaign.

Despite the match already in the books, LR finished the day with two more victories, including Nevio Dux’s three-set victory at No. 2 singles.

After falling short in the first set, 3-6, Dux stormed back with a 6-2 result to force a third set. With the final set sitting at a 5-5 score, Limestone’s Andre Zamorano could not continue in the match, giving the LR junior the win by retirement.

To close out the festivities, Connor Donley took a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, winning 7-6 (1), 6-3. The freshman now has a 3-1 record in singles during conference play.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team will be back on the road on Friday, March 15 as the Bears will face off against the Lees-McRae Bobcats. In their meeting back in 2023, the Bears pulled out a 4-3 match victory. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C.
