Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Defeats Emory and Henry

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team snapped their two-match losing streak on Wednesday as they took down Emory & Henry, 6-1.

In the conference home opener, the Bears got off to another great start in doubles for the second straight day, getting wins from Doubles No. 2 and No. 3 teams to secure the first point.

After a tough day of singles on Tuesday, LR was able to turn it around led by their No. 1 singles Zachary Cox who took a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Branson Smith.

Connor Gibson had an incredible comeback at No. 3 singles after dropping his first set, 3-6. The sophomore went on to win the second set in a 7-4 tiebreak before putting away Juan Alvarez in a 10-3 third set.

In the bottom half of the ladder, Patrik Alvestrand and Mattis Selde took straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. The senior, Alvestrand, was able to shut down Diego Alvarez, 6-3, 6-2, while the sophomore, Selde, took care of Brandon McGuire in a 6-2, 6-3 final.

Although Hernandez was able to finish his doubles match, the graduate student was unable to compete at No. 5 singles. Fortunately, Joel Hemmings didn’t skip a beat and won the pro-set by an 8-3 final.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team will return to the YMCA of Catawba Valley on Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. for their final non-conference match of the season against the Lander Bearcats.
