Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Defeats Anderson on the Road

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team continued its perfect start to the conference slate with a 5-2 victory at Anderson. It is the first time the Bears defeated the Trojans in their venue.

The meeting got off to another thrilling start as the doubles point came down to the final match. LR got off to a good start as the No. 1 doubles team of Rufus Plane and Vadym Rogynskyi cruised to a 6-2 victory.

However, the Trojans responded by knotting up the match with a 6-4 victory to make the No. 2 doubles contest the decisive tiebreaker. For the Bears, the team comprised of Zachary Cox and Mattias Selde powered through their match to take the doubles point and the set, 7-5.

While the Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, it did not last long as Anderson won the first singles match to square the contest at one apiece.

At No. 1 singles, Cox brought the momentum from his doubles match to capture a straight-set, 6-4, 6-0 victory to give the Bears the lead again.

With a 2-1 advantage, the bottom of the ladder went to work to help move the Bears closer to victory. At No. 6 singles, Connor Donley maneuvered his way through a difficult first set to deliver a statement second set. The freshman clinched his match in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Then at No. 4 singles, Rogynskyi started off the match with a 6-3 first set victory followed by a 6-1 loss in the second set. With his match tied up at one set apiece, the sophomore pushed through in the third set, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Bears.

Even though the match was finalized, the Bears scooped up another singles victory at the No. 5 line with Raphael Champaud. The sophomore dropped his first set, 6-4, only to bounce back with a 7-6 (6) second set. Instead of a traditional third set, the match came down to a 10-point tiebreaker, which Champaud squeezed by in a 11-9 outcome.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Tennis Team will have a quick turnaround for its home opener against Johnson C. Smith. The match is scheduled to begin on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. from the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
