Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaker Against Wingate

Luis Hernandez scored his second goal as a Bear in the second minute of the game, but Wingate scored twice in the final 21 minutes of the game to steal a 2-1 win in Hickory on Saturday night.

Hernandez scored just 68 seconds into the game for his second goal as a Bear. His first goal happened 43 seconds into the game against Limestone earlier in the season.

The Bears had nine shots to just one shot for Wingate in the first half, but LR went to the break up 1-0. Alexa Janjic for Wingate made three saves in the first half.

The Bears had several chances in the second half, but were not able to capitalize.

Wingate’s David Sahakyan scored the equalizer in the 69th minute, and then Emil Svenander had the game-winner in the 87th minute. Wingate out-shot LR 10-7 in the second half.

The Bulldogs were shown six yellow cards in the game, and the Bears were shown three.

The Bears and Bulldogs have split the last four meetings, all of which have taken place in Hickory.

Hernandez, a transfer from Barton, had 10 goals last year for the Bulldogs.

The Bears had four corner kicks to Wingate’s none.

The Bears are 6-3-1 overall, 3-3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will host Emory & Henry on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
