Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Soccer Picked Second in SAC Preseason Poll

After advancing to the fourth NCAA Tournament in program history last season, Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer was picked to finish second in the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced. Five Bears were also named preseason All-Conference – Carles Montoliu Lobo, Dani Fernandez, Jaime Poza, Harri Rowe and Juan Basabe.

The Bears received four first place votes from the league’s coaches and 114 points overall. Reigning regular season league champion Carson-Newman was picked first and received seven out of the possible 11 first-place votes.

Montoliu Lobo, a graduate student from Valencia, Spain, was named to the First-Team after receiving First-Team honors in 2021. He is a three-time All-Conference selection, and was the SAC Freshman of the Year in 2018. He was also named the SAC Scholar-Athlete of the year in men’s soccer for the 2021-22 school year, and earned the prestigious SAC Man of the Year award, given to one student-athlete every year for a combination of play on the field, academics and community service.

Fernandez, a graduate student from Madrid, Spain, was also named to the First-Team after earning Second-Team honors in 2021, and was the SAC Defensive Player of the Year in the spring 2021 season in addition to First-Team All-Conference honors.

Poza, a graduate student from Madrid, Spain, was named to the Second-Team after starting 16 games last year and scoring three goals and recording six assists. Rowe, a sophomore defender from Aberystwyth, Wales, was named to the Second-Team after earning Third-Team honors in 2021. Basabe, a senior from Durango, Spain, was named to the Third-Team after earning Second-Team honors in the Spring 2021 season. Basabe played in six games in goal for the Bears in the fall of 2021 after being injured in preseason training, and allowed just eight goals in six games with two clean sheets.

The Bears open the season at home against No. 11 Young Harris on Thursday, August 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Moretz Sports Complex.
