Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Soccer Downs Belmont Abbey

Oliver Gardner scored the game-winning goal unassisted in the 57th minute, and Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer bounced back with a 1-0 win over Belmont Abbey on Saturday night to bounce back from Wednesday’s loss. Tonight was LR’s 4th clean sheet of the year.

The Bears out-shot the Crusaders 7-1 in the first half, but neither team found the back of the net. The Bears had six corner kicks in the first half, and the Crusaders had none. Juan Basabe stopped the only shot he saw in the first half.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Gardner created his own chance and fired his second career goal past the goalkeeper for the only goal of the game. The Bears out-shot the Crusaders 8-3 in the second half, and peppered 15 total shots, including seven on goal.

Both of Gardner’s goals have been game-winning goals. He also scored the game-winner on October 13, 2021 against Mars Hill for his first career goal.

The Bears had 10 corner kicks to just two for Belmont Abbey.

Head coach Jack Winter has 61 career wins at LR, and 31 of them have been in shutout fashion. This is LR’s sixth straight win over Belmont Abbey. The Bears haven’t lost to the Crusaders since 2009. LR leads the all-time series 14-12-1.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 5-1-1 overall. The Bears step back into conference play with a home game against Anderson on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
