Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Soccer Blows Out Queens

The Lenoir-Rhyne’s Men Soccer team scored four times in the first seventeen minutes of action on Monday night to help them move on to the SAC Semifinals with a 5-1 win over Queens. The five goals ties the record for most goals scored in a SAC tourney game. Victor Cascon and Noah Tiefel had two goals a piece and goalkeeper Juan Basabe added two assists for the Bears.

Noah Tiefel got the Bears on the board early with a beautiful header just three minutes into the game. Tiefel added his second goal of the game in the 13th minute to gave LR a 2-0 lead.

Forty-one seconds later, Goalkeeper Juan Basabe delivered a beautiful ball off a goal kick to set up Jaime Poza for the Bears third goal of the game. In the 17th minute, Poza, the SAC leader in assists, set up Victor Cascon for his first of two goals on the evening.

The Royals got on the board in the 25th minute with a goal from Caleb Patsch.

Basabe was not done in the assists column as he found Cascon on another goal kick and Cascon beat three Royals and found the back of the net for his second goal of the evening. Basabe added three saves on the night in addition to his two assists. Basabe’s assists tonight was the first assist by a Bears goal-keeper since Zach King had an assist on 10/1/2016 also against Queens.

LR out shot the Royals 21-7 on the evening.

This was the first time these two teams have meet in the SAC tournament.

With the win, LR moves to 7-2-1 all time in the SAC tournament as a No. 2 seed. The last time the Bears were a No. 2 seed was in 2006 when they went through No. 7 Mars Hill, No. 6 Wingate and No. 1 Carson-Newman to win the tournament.

This game was the fifth time the Bears scored five goals in a SAC tourney game. Most recent time was in 2005 when the Bears upset the No. 3 seed Tusculum 5-2 in the quarterfinals.

LR will host the SAC Semi-finals on Thursday against #22 Anderson at 7 PM.
