Juan Hoyos scored his first career goal in the 14th minute, and that was all the offense Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer needed in a 1-0 win over Newberry on Saturday afternoon. The win marks the sixth clean sheet of the season for Juan Basabe and the Bear defense.
The Bears peppered the goal with shots in the first 10 minutes, but were not able to find the back of the net. LR out-shot Newberry 17-2 in the first half, but Hoyos’ goal in the 14th minute was the only tally. It was assisted by Adrian Martina and Arnau Olle, who picked up his first career assist as a Bear. Nine out of the 17 shots for the Bears were on goal. Juan Basabe made two saves in the in the first half as the Bears led 1-0 at the break. LR had the only corner kick of the first half.
The second half was more of the same on offense for the Bears. LR had a few other chances to score, and possessed it well throughout the half. However, the Bears were not able to get the ball in the back of the net, and held off the Wolves for a 1-0 win. The Bears out-shot the Wolves 10-6 in the second half, with Basabe making two more saves after halftime.
This was head coach Jack Winter’s 33rd career shutout at the helm of the Bear program, and 64th overall win. Hoyos becomes the second Bear this year to score his first career collegiate goal. Olle is the other. Martina’s assist was his second of the year.
The Bears get revenge on Newberry, who beat them 2-1 last year at Newberry. LR holds a 21-5-1 overall record against the Wolves.
Lenoir-Rhyne is 8-4-2, 5-4-1 SAC. The Bears will return home for the regular season finale against Catawba next Wednesday (10/26) at 5 p.m.
