Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse Has 20 Players Score in Win Over Mars Hill

The No. 2 Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse Team broke a program record as 20 different players scored at least one goal in the Bears 25-5 thumping of Mars Hill on Wednesday afternoon. LR scored the first nine goals of the game and never looked back as they improved to 9-1 on the season.

Caison Dillon opened the scoring with a goal at the 12:54 mark of the game, the first of nine unanswered goals by LR. The first nine goals were scored by nine different players with Kyle Hatcher and Jarrett Huff scoring with the man-advantage to close out the first quarter with LR up 4-0.

Colten McCracken opened the second quarter with a goal and then Kane Smith won the ensuing face off and went down to score and make it 7-0. Robert Walker and Jonathan Bender made it 9-0. After Mars Hill’s first goal of the half, Morgan Madish, Sloan Steward and John Paulus scored to make it 13-1 at the half. Paulus’ goal came with just five seconds left.

Will Canata started the second half with a goal and the Bears would push the lead to 20-1 on a Gabe Smith goal. Four of Mars Hill’s five goals came in the fourth quarter. Ben Hokenson netted a hat trick in that quarter for the Lions.

Madish led LR with three goals and Bender had two goals and two assists. Matt Jones added two goals and an assist. Four different goalies saw action for the Bears with Rob Pensabene earning the win after he made four saves in 24:53 of game action.

LR held a 51-27 advantage in shots and forced Mars Hill to turn the ball over 20 times. LR was 30-for-31 on clears and 2-for-2 on extra man opportunities.

LR has won eight straight over Mars Hill. This was the second largest margin of victory for LR over Mars Hill. In 2022, the Bears won 26-4. LR moves to 3-1 in road games this season. For the eighth time this season, LR has held its opponents in single digits in the scoring column.

LR is 9-1 overall, 4-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears return to action on Saturday when they host Newberry for a 4 p.m. face off.
