Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Anderson

The No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse Team held off an upset-minded Anderson team in the South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Moretz Stadium, winning 12-8. Jarrett Huff led LR with three goals while Donovan Powell and Sloan Steward each netted a pair. Rob Pensabene made 14 saves for the Bears who improved to 6-0 on the year.

Landon Parker started the scoring just over two minutes into the first quarter but Anderson answered at the 7:41 mark. The Bears would go on a 3-0 scoring spurt as Steward scored twice in that span, the first two goals of his LR career.

PJ Fenchak stopped the run with a goal for the Trojans but the Bears would answer with three straight once again. Zack Salo, Brad Maslowski and Powell would put LR up 7-2. Huff netted the Bears second man-up goal of the first half as LR took an 8-3 lead into the break.

However, Anderson wouldn’t go away and cut the lead to three on two separate occasions. LR held a 45-33 advantage in shots and 24-22 edge in shots on goal. Each side won 12 face offs.

Victor Powell and Duncan each caused three turnovers for the Bears. Fenchak had a hat trick for Anderson and Ryan Gundersen had two goals.

This was the first game against an opponent that wasn’t ranked in the top 10 in the nation since Feb. 8. The Bears are now 4-0 at home this season and 11-1 between the bricks over the past two years.

LR has held five straight opponents to single digits in the scoring column after giving up 10 to Barton in the season opener. The Bears have scored seven goals on the man advantage this year after scoring two more in this game.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears will return to action next Saturday when they travel to undefeated Limestone at 7 p.m. in one of the biggest matchups of the season in the conference.
