Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Basketball Falter Against Catawba

Lenoir-Rhyne men’s basketball fell to Catawba on Wednesday evening, 74-60, as the Indians completed the season sweep of the Bears. A balanced attack paced the Indians who were led by 14 points from Javeon Jones, one of five in double figures. Kris Robinson and Kaleb Wallace each had 13.

Nas Tyson had 15 points and seven boards on 7-of-11 shooting for Lenoir-Rhyne and T.J. Nesmith added 10 points and five boards. Hamilton Campbell came off the bench for 10 points and three assists and was 5-of-10 from the field. The Bears went just 3-of-20 from the 3-point line in the game and couldn’t overcome a 33% shooting performance from the field in the first half.

Despite a slow start to the second half, LR would finish shooting 51.6 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes and shaved a 21 point Catawba lead to nine with just over three minutes to play. Catawba had 19 assists on 27 made baskets.

LR was uncharacteristically sloppy, turning the ball over 20 times in the game which is a season high. Catawba hit 40 percent of their 3-pointers, one of just three teams to covert at 40 percent or higher from deep against LR all season.

The Bears fell to 7-3 at home this year. LR is now 39-37 in the NCAA Era against Catawba. This is the first season sweep of the Bears by Catawba since the 2014-15 season.

The Bears drop to 8-10 overall, 3-7 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will stay in the confines of Shuford Arena on Saturday when they host Newberry at 4 p.m.
