Lenoir-Rhyne Hosts Season Opener in Outdoor Track and Field

With the start of the outdoor track and field season underway, the Lenoir-Rhyne Track and Field Team won five events in its own backyard at the Irwin Track at the Moretz Sports Athletic Campus.

Jacob Wadsworth, a native of Dansville, N.Y., had two first-place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and long jump event.

On the track, the senior registered a time of 53.99, which is a half-second from his personal best in the event. In the field, he posted a leap of 7.38 meters, which is better than his finish in the 2023 SAC Outdoor Championships.

Meanwhile, for the women’s 400-meter hurdles, Sharonda Priester zoomed past the field with a time of 1:03.49. In another hurdle event, the 100-meter, the freshman recorded a second-place finish with a time of 14.92.

In the women’s high jump, there was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard, while two LR participants took a share of first place. Patricija Nemanyte and Kennedy Conner each posted the clearance of 1.61 meters to both pick up the first-place recognition.

For the men’s javelin throw, Josh Wise hoisted a first-place toss of 56.94 meters. That mark is a new personal best for the senior, who demolished his previous high by over three meters.

On the women’s side, Miranda Marr registered a second-place finish of 32.45 meters in the javelin throw competition.

Another event the Bears saw successful in was the men’s and women’s 1500-meter races. On the men’s side, Jacob Parkinson posted a time of 3:58.45 for a second-place finish while Lewis Budgen recorded a fourth-place time of 4:07.61.

On the women’s side, Sabrina Fleig finished second in the event with a time of 4:47.67, while Paige Ewald secured a fourth-place finish with a 4:49.18 time.

Having a noteworthy day on the short-track was freshman Sincere Sanders-Moss, who picked up second-place results in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with times of 10.56 and 21.01, respectively.

In the women’s shot-put event, LR had two top five finishers in Olivia Jackson and Nemanyte. Jackson, who was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet at the 2024 SAC Indoor Championships, recorded a third-place throw of 12.10 meters. For Nemanyte, the freshman finished fourth with her toss of 11.84 meters.

Sticking with the field, Philip Stomne collected a fourth-place finish in the men’s pole vault. The SAC Indoor Pole Vault Champion produced a leap of 4.26 meters in the competition.

The Bears garnered additional top five finishes on the track with Nick Tibolla in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and Damya Ortiz in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.

For Tibolla, the freshman collected a fifth-place time of 15.08 in his first collegiate hurdle event. Meanwhile, for Ortiz, the sophomore posted a new personal best in the race with a fifth-place time of 57.11.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Track and Field Team will venture out on the road for the first time in the outdoor season, as the Bears pay a visit to the Montreat College Open. The two-day event will get underway on Friday, March 22.
