Lenoir-Rhyne Football Wins First Home Game of the Season

In the first home game since December 7, 2019, the Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team cruised past Barton in the first matchup between the two programs since 1950. The Bears extended their winning streak against SAC opponents to 19 straight and have won 23 straight regular season games.

Grayson Willingham threw for a career-high 309 yards, which is the 8th most yards in a single game in program history. Willingham finished the day 22-of-27 and added two touchdowns and no turnovers.

After going for 160 yards on the ground in his debut, freshman RB Dwayne McGee toted the rock 29 times for 192 yards and scored three touchdowns. Deondre Lester finished the game with eight receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Lester’s yardage total was the ninth highest in a single game in the NCAA Era.

Jon Ross Maye had his second straight double-digit tackle game, finishing with 11 stops and three tackles for loss. Maye also added his first career sack. Percy King intercepted a pair of passes to give him three on the young season. The redshirt freshman had four tackles and one of his picks came in the end zone. With another sack in the game, Lenoir-Rhyne extends its streak with at least one sack to 41 straight games.

Chase Allbaugh went 3-for-3 on field goals and hit all four of his extra points.

As a team, Lenoir-Rhyne finished with 511 yards of total offense with 310 coming through the air and 201 on the ground. The Bears were just 3-of-9 on third down conversions while Barton was 7-of-16 and went 2-of-2 on fourth down.

After Barton’s first touchdown of the game put them up 6-3, Lenoir-Rhyne outscored the Bulldogs 38-7 the rest of the way.

Lenoir-Rhyne has won 12 straight regular season games at Moretz Stadium. Lenoir-Rhyne is now 10-0 all-time against Barton. This is the third straight season LR has won its home opener and the Bears improve to 53-34-4 in home openers.

Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will travel to Wingate after a bye week next week. The Bears and Bulldogs will tangle on Friday, April 2.
