Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Upends Second Ranked North Greenville

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team started its longest road stretch of the season with an 8-1 victory over No. 2 North Greenville.

After allowing their most runs in a single game since 2018 on Saturday, the Bears held the Crusaders to only seven hits. The Bears pitching department also struck out nine batters.

Blake Bean made a major contribution at the plate as he led all players with four runs batted in. The graduate student drove in a single run in four consecutive appearances at the plate with two hits, one walk and one fielder’s choice.

The Bears survived an early Crusaders push at the beginning of the contest as North Greenville stranded five runners on base through the first two innings. However, Jaxon Mangum and the Bears got out of both jams and responded with a four-run third inning.

With the response, LR pulled away from North Greenville and earned its first win against a ranked opponent in 2024.

With Bean’s third-inning double, the Farmington Hills, Mich. native improved his team-best hitting streak to 12 games. Sal Crricato recorded his fourth multi-RBI game of the season thanks to his 2-RBI ground-rule double in the third inning.

Mangum earned his first victory of the season after his five innings of work. The junior struck out five batters and allowed only one unearned run. The Bears stacked up four doubles in the contest. Zach Evans, Bryce Stober, Bean, and Carricato each had a two-bagger for the Bears.

LR only stranded six runners on base throughout the game. North Greenville stranded 11 on the paths. LR continues to lead the all-time series, 18-13.

In addition to the 13-5 loss in Hickory on Feb. 7, the Bears and Crusaders split the regular-season series for the third consecutive year. This win marks the first time the Bears have won in Tigerville, S.C. since May 20, 2022, which was the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

LR is now 9-8 in road games against North Greenville. In the previous 10 meetings, the Bears and Crusaders sit at an even 5-5 record.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team is 12-4 overall on the season and will return to conference play with a three-game road series against Catawba in Salisbury, N.C. First pitch of the series is scheduled to get started at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
