Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Routs UVa.-Wise

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team swept a SAC doubleheader from UVA Wise by exploding for 38 runs and 12 home runs. In game 1, LR slugged six long balls and got ten strikeouts from Alex Shirazi to get a 15-2 win. In the night cap, the Bears scored 23 runs on 25 hits for a 23-8 win.

In game one, the Bears got on the board quickly with a two-run double from Matt Mackey in the first inning. LR then clubbed their first two home runs of the afternoon in the second inning with back-to-back homers. Ferlenda hit a three-run shot then E.J. Ranel went yard. Nick Clarno added a solo shot in the third inning before Ferlenda hit his second three-run homer later in the inning. Drue Galassi and Connor Smith finished the scoring with homers in the 5th.

Wade Cuda went 3-3 with two runs and two RBIs on the afternoon.

Alex Shirzai went the distance striking out ten Cavaliers in the complete game. Shirzai moved his record to 2-1 on the year.

In game two, Galassi opened the scoring with a two-run homerun, his seventh of the year, in the second. Ranel added his second of the day with a solo shot in the third. The Bears then scored 19 runs in the last four innings to end the game on the mercy rule. Ferlenda, Clarno, Cuda and Topher Grant all hit home runs for the Bears during that stretch.

Ranel, Smith, Clarno and Cuda each had three hits for the Bears while Ferlenda, Galassi, Grant, Clarno each had three RBIs.

Tanner Moyers got his first win as a Bear as he went five innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out eight. Kanan Butler and Austin Blevins threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Bears.

Six home runs were the most in a game since the Bears hit four on February 1, 2017 against Belmont Abbey. The 23 runs is the most for the Bears since scoring the same amount against Goldey-Beacom on February 17, 2018.

Before this year, the last time the Bears hit back-to-back homeruns was in 2016. The Bears have done it twice this year. Ranel and Mackey at Francis Marion and in this contest with Ferlenda and Ranel. Cuda and Grant each hit their first homers of the season.

Ferlenda finished the day with three home runs and nine RBIs.

This was the first meeting all-time between the programs. UVA Wise joined the SAC last year but the teams did not play each other before the season was shut down.

The two teams came into play on the opposite side of the spectrum when talking about pitching. The Bears pitching staff leads the SAC with a 3.45 era while the Cavaliers are last at 13.64.

L-R is 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the South Atlanitc Conference. The teams will finished their series tomorrow with a double-header tomorrow starting at 1pm.
