Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Falls to Carson-Newman

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team had its four-game winning streak snapped at four with a 9-8 defeat to Carson-Newman.

On a blustery day at Durham Field, the Eagles had no problem finding the jet stream as they launched five home runs in the contest.

Throughout the matchup, there were four unique instances where Carson-Newman was able to break away from a tie and re-gain the lead. The Eagles never trailed in the contest, but did have their greatest lead, a four-run margin, wiped away in the fifth.

Carson-Newman’s James Denton became the first opposing player to hit multiple home runs in a single game against LR since April 19, 2022. The senior had a pair of solo home runs in the fifth and eighth innings.

With the loss, LR falls a game behind Carson-Newman in the SAC standings. The two programs entered the day with matching 8-7 conference records, which was good enough for a share of seventh in the league standings.

Cole Laskowski extended his team-high hit streak to 10 games with a fifth-inning single. The redshirt junior has had two hit streaks reach double figures in 2024. Sal Carricato crushed his team-high 10th home run of the season. The redshirt junior had a two-run home run in the fifth inning, which at the time, tied the game at six. Khi Holiday had a productive day on the base paths as the junior scored a team-high three runs. The Tupelo, Miss. native had four on-base appearances. Both pitching departments were dealing as LR recorded 11 strikeouts while Carson-Newman had 10 punchouts on the mound.

With the LR loss, Carson-Newman now leads the all-time series, 65-39. With the Carson-Newman victory, the Eagles have now won three-straight games in Hickory, N.C. This marked the first meeting between these two programs at Durham Field since Feb. 23, 2020. LR entered the day with an even 20-20 record at home against Carson-Newman. With the loss, the Eagles have taken the one-game lead. This was the first time that LR has lost the series opener to Carson-Newman since April 13, 2018. That was a 7-5 defeat for the Bears in Jefferson City, Tenn.
