Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Defeats Newberry in Series Opener

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team snapped its five-game losing streak to Newberry with a 7-4 victory in the weekend opener.

After the Bears lead for the first seven innings of the contest, Newberry’s Luke Compton tied the game up at four with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Despite the Wolves swinging the momentum back into its favor, Owen Blackledge broke through with the clutch at-bat with a 2-RBI single, giving the Bears a massive conference win.

Dillon Chapa, who has typically been a Saturday starter for the Bears, got the victory on the mound. The junior produced his longest outing of the season with an eight-inning evening while giving up only seven hits and three runs.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, Cole Bramhall was tasked with the job of bringing the game home for the Bears. Fortunately for LR, the redshirt junior collected his first save of the season by striking out three Newberry batters.

Khi Holiday, who entered Friday with the most runs scored in the SAC, led the team by scoring on two separate occasions. LR accumulated three doubles on the day from three separate players. Cole Laskowski, Sal Carricato and Zach Evans each recorded a two-bagger. Speaking of Carricato, the redshirt junior now has his longest hitting streak with the Bears at 10. The Long Island, N.Y. native had a nine-game hit streak earlier this season. Blake Bean, who had three on-base appearances, was hit by a pitch two times in the batters’ box. The Bears almost let the game slip away from them by stranding 11 runners on base. Newberry only left five of its runners on base.

Despite the LR win, Newberry leads the all-time series, 62-56-1. This LR victory snaps an 11-game losing streak at the Smith Road Complex. The last time LR won at Newberry was on March 29, 2014. With the LR win, it is the first time that LR has defeated Newberry since April 18, 2021. The Bears collected their 10th SAC victory of the season on Friday. It marks the fourth-straight season that LR has notched double-digit conference wins. If the Bears can win a single game on Saturday against Newberry, it will be their first road conference series victory of the 2024 season.

The Bears are now 23-15 overall, 10-9 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team will continue the weekend series against Newberry with a Saturday doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex. The day will get started at 1 p.m. with a nine-inning contest followed by a seven-inning game at 4 p.m.
