Lenoir Man Killed in Wednesday Afternoon Crash

One person was killed in an accident in Caldwell County yesterday (March 9). The deceased is 78-year-old James Junior Rich of Lenoir.

At about 12:40 Wednesday afternoon, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the accident on N.C. Highway 18 near Cedar Rock Circle. The accident occurred as an eastbound 1997 Toyota Camry on Highway 18 crossed left of center and collided head-on with a westbound 2017 Hyundai Sonata. A westbound tractor-trailer traveling behind the Hyundai also sustained damage.

Mr. Rich was driving the Camry. He passed away at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, a 30-year-old Hickory man, was injured and was transported by E.M.S. to Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Both drivers were restrained by seatbelts.

The initial investigation does not indicate speed or alcohol impairment as contributing factors. No charges are expected. Highway 18 was closed for approximately 90 minutes during the on-scene investigation.
