Law Enforcement Agency Requests Help In Finding Man Impersonating Officer

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public to assist them in finding an individual who is impersonating law enforcement. Wednesday (October 20) at approximately 6:50 a.m. a high school age female was traveling along Little Mountain Road when she was stopped by what she believed was a law enforcement officer. The appearance and demeanor of the individual resulted in the victim concluding that they were impersonating a law enforcement officer.

This person allowed the female to leave following a brief verbal exchange in which she asked to see a badge and what department he was employed by. The victim reported the incident to her School Resource Officer. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division has initiated an investigation into this incident.

The person who stopped the victim is described as a white male in his 30s, approximately 5’8″ with a medium build. This person has a long, dark colored beard, and was wearing what appeared to be a law enforcement style uniform with a firearm and other law enforcement type equipment. No badge was present on their clothing or displayed during this incident. The suspect was operating a black SUV type vehicle. This vehicle did not have any law enforcement style markings on it but was equipped with blue lights in its front windshield.

The public’s assistance is requested in locating this person. Anyone who’s interacted with this person or who has seen a person matching this description is asked to contact the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office at 828-464-3112.

The Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips if you believe you have been stopped by someone impersonating an officer. Turn your vehicle’s emergency flashers on and continue driving at a slower speed while attempting to pull over in a well-lit, populated area. Ask the person stopping you to provide you with photo ID and which department they work for. Pay attention to clothing the person is wearing. And request another officer to respond to the traffic stop.
