L-R Women’s Tennis Defeats Carson-Newman to Stay Undefeated in SAC Play
The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team continued their perfect start to conference play with a 5-2 victory over Carson-Newman on Wednesday.
Alicia Wahlberg had a perfect day on the court with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles, including her 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles alongside with Lucy Whelan.
Although the two sides both won a doubles match, with Carson-Newman taking No. 2 doubles in a 6-1 final, the Eagles did not have enough players to compete in No. 3 doubles. That meant that the Bears won by default and earned the point.
The top two singles lines were handled by the Bears as Evgeniya Pugina overcame her doubles loss to take the 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
Meanwhile in the match of the day, Sandy Mitsou prevailed at No. 5 singles. The senior came back from a set down to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-4 and earned the gutsy victory.
In addition to one doubles match going in favor of the Bears, they were also given a win by default at No. 6 singles as Carson-Newman could not fill the spot.
Up next for the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team is a trip to Gaffney, S.C. for a conference matchup against Limestone on Tuesday, March 14.
