Freedom High School grad Blaikley Crooks and Alyssa Wagner each set career-highs with 13 points in the Bears 63-52 win against Newberry in the Bears home finale. Emily Harman had a near triple-double finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
In the first half, the Bears jumped out to a 7-3 lead as they held the Wolves to one field goal in the first seven minutes of action. Wolves did cut the lead to one heading into the second quarter.
L-R went on a 8-0 run to start the second quarter. In the first 1:48 of the quarter, the Bears got three-pointers from Kennedy Weigt, and Harman then a bucket from Mallory Sherrill, which forced the Wolves into a timeout. LR continued their run, scoring 20 second quarter points in just over five minutes of action but only had two field goals after the media timeout. The Bears shot 76% from the floor in the second quarter after shooting 17% in the first quarter.
Mallory Sherrill was the fourth Bear in double figures with ten points.
The second half saw a back and forth battle but Newberry could not cut into the LR lead. LR opened a 22 point lead with eight minutes left to go before Newberry made a late-push but could not get within single digits. Crooks had 11 of her career 13 points in the second half on 5-7 shooting. The Bears had eight assists in the half on their twelve buckets.
With 12 points, Freshman Emily Harman went over the 200 points mark in just her 15th game of the season. Harman also grabbed her 100th rebound on the season.
Harman’s nine assists is a career high for the freshman guard. Three of Wagner’s four highest scoring outputs have come against the Wolves.
With another three-pointer in the game, Weigt will need five more to hit 200 three-pointers in her career.
Crooks recorded her 100th point with her 4th quarter basket.
For both teams fourth games in eight days. The teams opened this stretch with Newberry’s 72-61 win against the Bears last Monday in Newberry.
With the win, the Bears finished 5-4 at home and for the third straight season had a winning record at home.
The Bears last triple double was Kendall Toinetta on December 5, 2017.
The Bears improve to 5-13 overall and 5-12 in the South Atlantic Conference. LR will close out the regular season with a trip to Queens on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
