L-R Baseball Defeats Anderson
The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team overcame an early six-run deficit to steal a game from the Trojans, and sweep the series in a 11-10 final.
Blake Bean was the hero for the Bears with his RBI double in the ninth inning to score the game-winning run in the form of Bryce Stober.
After the slow start for LR, they found themselves down by six runs after two innings of play, but the offense clicked consistently between the third and sixth inning. In each frame, the Bears tallied up multiple runs to go up by two.
As Braden Houston entered the game in the seventh inning, it was a difficult start for the relief pitcher by giving up a couple of unearned runs. However, the redshirt senior rediscovered his craft and struck out a game-high three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.
Zach Evans launched his second home run of the series in back-to-back games; the redshirt sophomore now has three on the season. With the Bears’ 15 hits, LR was able to record double-figure hits in each game this series. Tallied 13 in the opening game of the series, followed by tying a season-best 16 hits in the second game of the doubleheader yesterday.
Stober and Evans both had great days at the plate with each player driving in three runs; Meanwhile, Bean led all Bears with three hits. Out of the 10 runs the Bears gave up, only six of them were earned. The four total were divided among Andrew Patrick and Houston, with each being on the mound when the Trojans scored two unearned runs.
Usually an aggressive base-running team, the Bears didn’t attempt a stolen base in Sunday’s contest.
With the sweep over Anderson, it is the second-straight season where the Bears swept their first SAC opponent in a three-game series. Speaking about sweeps, this is the third consecutive weekend sweep for the Bears after winning all three games against Southern Wesleyan and Cedarville.
It is the fourth-straight series victory for the Bears over the Trojans, dating back to the 2020 season. LR is the last undefeated team in the SAC with its 3-0 record; on the other end, Anderson is the last winless team in conference play.
This game brings an end to the Bears’ four-game road stretch, which matches their longest road trip of the season. The next four-game road slate will begin on March 28 against Limestone.
The Bears are 16-5 overall, 3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team will return home to Durham Field for a mid-week battle against the Catawba Indians. First pitch is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. The Bears will look to sweep the season series after pulling out a 5-3 victory over Catawba in Salisbury, N.C. on Feb. 15.
