35-year-old Rohit Patel of Twilight Lane in Statesville was arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony second-degree kidnapping and two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery.
According to information released Wednesday (September 16), on August 29, 2020, deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a report in reference to a sexual assault which had occurred at a business on Salisbury Road, east of Statesville. When deputies arrived at the scene, they interviewed the victim, who said a man had inappropriately touched her.
The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Katie Harwell of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit for further investigation. During the course of the investigation Sergeant Harwell was able to identify an additional female victim. That woman also said that the same man had also assaulted her in the past.
She described the event to Harwell and said, after the suspect had inappropriately touched her he attempted to keep her from leaving the store by stepping in front of her and shoving her backwards. He reportedly continued to forcibly shove her towards the rear of the store. The victim said she was in fear of the suspect pushing her into the beer cooler, and assaulting her further.
Based on evidence, and statements gathered in the investigation, Sergeant Harwell was able to obtain arrest warrants on Rohit Patel. He was arrested and given a $25,000 secured bond. Patel was released on that bond amount, a District Court appearance is scheduled for October 6.
