Joint Operation Results in Arrests of Three Probation Absconders

A joint operation involving multiple agencies has resulted in the arrests of three probation absconders. They are 38-year-old James Allen Jones and 41-year-old Kasey Leigh Hice, both from the same address on Cape Hickory Road in Hickory, along with 35-year-old Gregory Leigh McConnell of the West View Acres Avenue Extension in Hickory. Jones and Hice were both wanted for felony probation violations. McConnell was wanted for felony failure to appear on a probation violation.

The operation took place on April 16 & 17 and included the Burke County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations & Narcotics Divisions, the Long View Police Department, Burke County Probation & Parole, the N.C. Department of Adult Corrections Special Operations & Intelligence Unit, and the United States Marshals’ Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Officers found Jones and Hice at the Cape Hickory Road address. Officers briefly surrounded the residence and called out the suspects. Jones and Hice were taken into custody without further incident. Jones had been actively evading law enforcement since August of 2022 and Hice since April of 2023.

On April 17, Officers went to McConnell’s residence. As Officers arrived, McConnell fled into a wooded area. Officers contained the scene and surveilled the area for several hours. McConnell was apprehended in a vehicle stop as an associate or associates attempted to remove him from the scene in a car. McConnell had been evading apprehension since December of last year.

Jones was jailed without bond, while Hice was given a $20,000 secured bond. McConnell was also jailed without bond. All three suspects were scheduled to appear in court today (April 18). McConnell also has a Superior Court date set for June 5.

The investigation is ongoing. Charges for harboring fugitives are expected.
