TROUTMAN, N.C. (WHKY) — A major upgrade is coming to the Iredell County Fairgrounds after county commissioners approved the second phase of a long-planned redevelopment project that will include a new regional farmers market capable of serving as an emergency shelter during disasters.

Commissioners voted this week to award a $7.58 million construction contract to F.L. Blum for Phase 2 of the fairgrounds project. The centerpiece of the expansion will be a 10,000-square-foot farmers market featuring 29 vendor stalls, a commercial kitchen, offices, conference space and restrooms. County officials say the building is also being designed so it can serve as an emergency shelter when severe weather or other disasters strike the area.

Construction is expected to begin in September, once the 2026 Iredell County Agricultural Fair concludes. Officials expect the project to be completed before the start of the 2027 fair. During construction, most of the fairgrounds will remain open for community events, including horse sales, the Troutman Independence Day celebration and other activities coordinated by the county’s Parks and Recreation Department.

County leaders say the project is funded largely through a $5 million state grant and is intended to provide farmers with a modern, year-round marketplace while also strengthening the county’s emergency preparedness. The new facility is part of a broader effort to improve the fairgrounds and expand services for residents across Iredell County.
