Inmate At Burke County Prison Found Deceased In Cell

An inmate at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton was found deceased. 53-year-old Jeffery Riley Hoke was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday (May 19). Correctional staff began life-saving procedures, but EMS pronounced Hoke deceased at approximately 5:45 a.m.

Law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified and are investigating, as required in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Hoke was convicted in September 2023 of speeding to elude arrest and larceny of a motor vehicle in Catawba County. After serving three months, he was released to probation in January 2024. His probation was revoked following an arrest in March. A projected release date had not yet been determined at the time his death.
