An injured hiker was rescued Friday after emergency crews responded to the recently reopened Profile Trail in Avery County.

According to the Linville-Central Rescue Squad, Avery County 911 Communications received a report of an injured hiker earlier in the day. Responders from the Linville-Central Rescue Squad, Linville Volunteer Fire Department, EMS Avery, and North Carolina State Parks hiked more than two miles to reach the injured person.

After providing a medical assessment and initial treatment, rescuers placed the hiker in a Stokes basket and carried the patient off the mountain to a waiting ambulance for transport.

The rescue effort also received unexpected assistance from members of the Watauga County Rescue Squad and Foscoe Fire Department, who happened to be hiking the trail and volunteered to help with the carryout.

Following the successful rescue, emergency personnel conducted a brief mission debriefing before clearing the scene. Information on the hiker’s condition has not been released.
