HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba Valley Community College head women’s basketball coach Nikkyanna McCaskill has announced the addition of Jovan Hoover to the Red Hawk coaching staff as an assistant coach.

A Hickory native and graduate of Hickory High School, Hoover brings more than 10 years of basketball coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. His coaching background includes experience with both men’s and women’s high school programs, as well as collegiate women’s basketball.

Hoover most recently served on the women’s basketball coaching staff at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, where he helped the program achieve the best start in school history. During the program’s first season competing in the Coast-to-Coast Conference, Hoover was also part of a coaching staff that was recognized as the conference’s Coaching Staff of the Year.

“Jovan is a tremendous addition to our women’s basketball program, and I’m excited to welcome him to the Red Hawk family,” McCaskill said. “His extensive coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels, combined with his commitment to developing young women on and off the court, will be a great asset to our program. Jovan also brings a strong connection to the Hickory community and a proven track record of helping build successful programs. I’m looking forward to working with him as we continue to build something special here at CVCC.”

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Hoover has played an important role in developing young women basketball players throughout Hickory and the surrounding area through Team Hickory Basketball Club. He helped build the organization while coaching athletes from across the area and previously served as the club’s Ladies Program Director before stepping away to pursue collegiate coaching.

Hoover also played football collegiately at Western Carolina University following his time at Hickory High School.

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue doing what I love and to bring my experience, passion and commitment to the CVCC women’s basketball program,” Hoover said. “I look forward to helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the court while continuing to build a successful program at CVCC.”
