App State women’s soccer earned a 1-0 victory against Troy on Friday evening at Troy Soccer Complex.
The Mountaineers snap a five-match winless streak, improving to 3-7-1 and 3-5 in Sun Belt play. Troy falls to 0-6-1 overall and in league action.
“I’m very proud of this group,” head coach Sarah Strickland said. “The girls have been incredible following the rules and expectations to stay healthy. They’ve been working hard on the field to get better every day.”
All the Mountaineers needed to sweep the season series was an Izzi Wood (Hickory, N.C./Hickory) goal in the ninth minute of the contest. Woods stole a pass that was headed for the Troy goalkeeper and shot it in the lower left of the net.
App State held off a Troy offense that shot 14 times with only two being on goal. Kerry Eagleston (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) played all 90 minutes between the posts, making a pair of saves and earning her fourth clean sheet of the season. The fourth shutout puts the sophomore in a tie for ninth in program history for clean sheets in a single season.
Both of Appalachian’s shot attempts were on frame with Wood’s and Mumu Guisasola’s (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes Academy) shot in the 73rd minute that was saved by Lindsey LaRoche.
App State will face South Alabama, Sunday at 1 pm (ET) in Mobile.
