NEWTON, N.C. (WHKY) – 53-year-old Stephen Jack Stines of 3rd Street SE in Hickory was arrested Saturday (September 26) by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony failure to register as a sex offender. Stines is a sex offender as a result of convictions in Buncombe and Madison Counties. Stines was convicted of indecent liberties with a minor in 1997 in Buncombe and the same charge in 2004 in Madison.

Following the arrest, Stines was jailed in the Catawba County Detention Facility under no bond. A court date is scheduled for October 19.
