Hickory Residents Charged With Murder In Burke County (Updated, 1:25 p.m. 7/27/26)
MORGANTON, N.C. (WHKY) – Two Hickory residents have been charged with two counts apiece of first-degree murder following the discovery of human remains near a Glen Alpine nature trail.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Jamar Quarmaine Propst and 36-year-old Tosha Lee Lewis were each arrested on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of felony conspiracy. Both are being held without bond and are scheduled to make their first court appearance Monday, July 27.

The investigation began on July 20 when Burke County deputies and the Glen Alpine Police Department responded to suspicious circumstances near the nature trail at 618 Hennessee Street in Glen Alpine.
On July 21, investigators, assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, located human remains near the trail and launched a joint homicide investigation.
Authorities say both suspects were taken into custody without incident early Saturday morning, July 25. Later that day, investigators discovered additional human remains in the same area, leading to a second set of first-degree murder and felony conspiracy charges against both suspects.

The remains of the victim discovered on July 21 have been identified as 31-year-old Raheim McClain Murray of NC 18 US 64, Morganton. The Sheriff’s Office issued another update on Monday (July 27) stating that the remains of the second victim, discovered on July 25, have been identified as 39-year-old Carla Janon Murray, of NC 18 US 64, Morganton.
