The Hickory Downtown Development Association and the Oktoberfest Committee have announced that Hickory’s Oktoberfest will be canceled again this year. The event had been scheduled for October 8-thru-10. According to statement posted on Hickory Oktoberfest’s Facebook page, the decision to cancel was made out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the community in light of the continued spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant and the rising rate of hospitalizations in the area.
The statement cites the low vaccination rate in Catawba County, which stood at 43%, at last report. Event planners have chosen to cancel so as not to put local health providers and hospitals in a more difficult situation.
The Hickory Downtown Development Association expressed its appreciation for the community’s support and understanding.
