HICKORY — Despite recent rainfall, the City of Hickory says Stage 2 water restrictions will remain in effect as drought conditions continue to impact the region.

City officials say the recent rain provided only temporary relief and was not enough to improve reservoir levels, stream-flow and drought conditions to the point where restrictions could be eased.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, customers may irrigate no more than two days per week. Irrigation remains prohibited on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Exceptions are allowed for newly planted grass, sod and turf-grass.

The city also prohibits residential vehicle washing, filling swimming pools, operating ornamental water features without animal life and other non-essential outdoor water uses.

Violations may result in fines ranging from $100 for a first offense to $300 for a third offense. Officials say repeated violations could result in the loss of irrigation water service.

The restrictions apply to customers served by the City of Hickory water system, including Hickory, Conover, Claremont, Brookford, Catawba, Long View, Maiden and portions of Alexander and Catawba counties.

City officials say they will continue monitoring drought conditions and water supplies throughout the Catawba-Wateree River Basin.
