Hickory High Wins State 3A Dual Team Boys Tennis Championship

The Hickory Red Tornadoes edged the Carrboro Jaguars 5-4 to capture the 2023 NCHSAA 3A Men’s Dual Team Tennis crown on Saturday.

Hickory was a Co-Champion in 2021 thanks to COVID-19 restrictions and they won their first outright title since 2006 on Saturday in Burlington.

The Red Tornadoes and Jaguars split the singles matches 3-3 but the #1 match proved to be a critical point. Both sets went to a tiebreaker as Carrboro’s Johnathan Baddour and Hickory’s Griffin Lovern each won one. Lovern won the tiebreak 10-8 to send the match to doubles play tied at 3-3.

In the doubles matches, Lovern and Graham Powers won their match 8-2 and Clint Powers teamed with Ben Howard to win their match 8-6 and seal the win.
