Hickory High Teacher Wins $75,000 National Teaching Award
HICKORY, N.C. (WHKY) — A Hickory High School automotive teacher has won a national award that will provide funding for both the educator and his classroom program. Terry Drum is one of 25 winners of the 2026 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.
The $75,000 award includes $50,000 for Hickory High’s automotive program and $25,000 for Drum.
Selected from more than 400 applicants nationwide, Drum helps students build automotive skills and gain workplace experience through internships with local dealerships. Drum’s students have won multiple competitions, and most earn industry-recognized certifications before graduating.
Drum said he was grateful for the recognition and said the funding would help the program give students more opportunities to prepare for their careers.
The award recognizes excellence in skilled trades education.
