Hickory High Duo Wins State Doubles Tennis Title
This weekend was the individual state boys tennis championships. In the 3A class, held at the Burlington Tennis Center, St. Stephens Ajay Swisher fell in the semifinal round to the defending runner up Josh Mayhew of Cedar Ridge High School in three sets, winning the first set 6-3 but dropping the final two 6-0, 6-1. Swisher finished in the top four of the 3A class.
Meanwhile, the Hickory High duo of Griffin Lovern and Graham Powers won the state doubles championship. Lovern was a runner up last year in doubles, but wins with freshman Powers. The duo won 6-1, 6-1 over Carrboro’s Jonas Miyagawa and Wesley Hanes.
The dual team tennis tournament resumes Monday with Hickory hosting Atkins and St. Stephens going to Lake Norman Charter in the 3A third round.
