Hickory Fire Department Urges Safe Charging Ahead of Fire Prevention Week

HICKORY, N.C. (WHKY) –  The Hickory Fire Department is urging residents to make fire safety a priority when charging phones, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes and other devices.

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4th through the 10th, with this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

The Hickory Fire Department is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to highlight the dangers associated with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Officials say damaged batteries or improper charging can cause devices to overheat, catch fire or explode.

Residents are encouraged to use the charger that came with a device or one approved by the manufacturer, and to charge devices on hard, flat surfaces rather than beds, couches or under pillows.

Fire officials also say residents should stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smokes or develops a strange smell. Devices should be unplugged when fully charged.

Larger batteries, including those used in e-bikes, scooters and power tools, should be charged outside and away from exits.

The Hickory Fire Department also reminds residents to have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.
