Hickory FC Wins Inaugural Game as Member of NPSL

Hickory FC won their inaugural game at Moretz Stadium at Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday night, defeating Apotheos FC 2-0.

Despite the rainy, misty conditions, diehards were entertained with the first game of the National Premier Soccer League and they were not disappointed. After a ceremonial first kick from Hickory mayor Hank Guess, Hickory FC was in control of the contest throughout most of the match.

After a scoreless first half, Hickory got their first goal in program history thanks to an own goal. Maxime Webster, dribbling down the left side, fired a cross directed to Pablo Obrador, but the Apotheos defender deflected it into the back of the net.

THe fairytale story continued in the 87th minute when 2017 Bunker Hill grad Jorge Jimenez crushed a shot 30 yards out to the back of the net to send the hometown faithful into a frenzy.

Jasper Rump picked up the clean sheet in goal.

Hickory FC is 1-0 on the season. They will face nearby rival Appalachian FC for a friendly, in Boone, on Tuesday. The next NPSL match will be on the road at Greenville United Saturday.
