Hickory FC and Asheville City SC battled through 90 minutes without a breakthrough Saturday night, playing to a 0-0 draw at Moretz Stadium in a match that ultimately secured a USL League Two playoff berth for the visitors while leaving Hickory with scoreboard watching after the regular-season finale.

The result moved Hickory to 9-4-1 (28 points) and Asheville City to 8-1-5 (29 points). Asheville’s point was enough to clinch a postseason spot, while Hickory dropped one place to third in the South Atlantic Division standings after entering the night in second. Charlotte Independence 2 remained atop the division with 35 points.

In a tightly contested, physical match, neither side was able to solve the opposing defense despite several promising attacks. Hickory goalkeeper Daniel Miklosi and the back line turned in another clean-sheet performance, while Asheville’s defense matched the effort to preserve the deadlock.

The match became increasingly physical as it wore on. Hickory defender Luke Munson received a yellow card in the 37th minute before midfielder Martin Kozak was cautioned in the 64th. Defender Charlie Naylor picked up another booking in the 84th minute as both teams fought for every possession during the closing stages.

Hickory was also forced to manage an injury concern before halftime. Midfielder Tomas Pollachi appeared to injure his hand late in the opening half but returned after the break with the hand heavily taped.

Head coach Carlos Rubio made four second-half substitutions in an effort to generate a late winner. James Lane replaced Pollachi in the 56th minute, Fabio Boa Sorte Rodrigues entered for Tate Asante in the 65th, Ronan O’Mahony replaced Juan Correa in the 77th, and Bunker Hill grad Jorge Jimenez came on for Alvaro Bonet in the 83rd minute.

Despite the changes, neither side found the decisive goal as the match ended scoreless.

The draw completed Hickory FC’s inaugural USL League Two regular season with a 9-4-1 record and 28 points. While Asheville City secured its playoff berth with the result, Hickory’s postseason hopes remain alive heading into the final day of the South Atlantic Division schedule.

Hickory will now await the outcome of Appalachian FC’s regular-season finale. A tie or loss by Appalachian would send the Trees into the USL League Two playoffs as the division’s final qualifier. An Appalachian victory, however, would end Hickory’s season.
