The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers on the road Friday, 8-4. The Crawdads rallied from a 4-0 deficit entering the top of the seventh inning. In fact, the Crawdads had no hits up to that point.
Everything changed in the seventh inning for Hickory. Austin Roberts came in for the Grasshoppers and immediately walked Hickory’s Frainyer Chavez on five pitches. After a strikeout, Blaine Crim came to the plate for the Crawdads and was walked. Jake Guenther homered to pull the Crawdads to within one run, 4-3.
In the eighth inning, back-to-back walks by Scott Kapers and Isaias Quiroz prompted a pitching change by Greensboro. Jonathan Ornelas immediately singled, scoring Kapers. Frainyer Chavez advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. A passed ball scored Quiroz giving Hickory a one-run lead. Justin Foscue then homered, scoring Ornelas and Hickory led 7-4.
Kole Enright hit a solo homerun in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring.
Hickory improves to 2-2 on the season. The Crawdads have their home opener Tuesday against Winston-Salem.
